spacebar counters are a great way to keep track of how fast and accurately you can type. Many employers use speed tests to test job applicants, and having an accurate representation of your typing speed is important. Here is a guide to making your own spacebar counter so you can practice and get a better handle on your typing speed:
1. Buy a timer and a ruler or measuring tape. You may be able to borrow one from a friend, but it's best to go buy your own so that each time you practice, the measurements will be consistent. If you're feeling crafty, you can make your own ruler out of cardboard or paper if desired.
2. Find an appropriate space on which to place the ruler or measuring tape – this should be flat so that the measurements stay consistent each time you use it. Then place the timer at an appropriate distance away from the ruler or measuring tape (for example, one foot away).
3. Set the timer for however long you want – most typing tests are timed around 1-2 minutes so make sure to set it accordingly if that's what you plan on using the counter for. Once the timer starts, press down on the spacebar one time with each finger so that by the time your hands reach back around again, there is exactly one space between them (this will help keep track of how many words per minute you're producing).
4. As soon as both hands reach back around for another go-around (once all 10 fingers have hit the spacebar once), count up all the spaces between them and stop the timer when reaching 10 spaces (this will indicate that one full minute has passed). Record this number somewhere so when practicing later, you have a reference point for how many words per minute you achieved during that session.
5. To keep challenging yourself and advancing in speed, try repeating step 4 with alternating hands or fingers pressed down once on each new button press – this way, not only are both hands being used equally but also it helps prevent mistakes due to muscle memory by constantly changing up technique!
